James Joyce remains one of the great enigmas of Irish literature. A self-imposed exile from his native city created an almost obsessive preoccupation with it for the last 40 years of his life.

Hemingway used to say someone would know something 'like Joyce knew Dublin', and his encyclopedic memory of the city shows in his work. For those of us lucky enough to live here, though, it is his sense of the sounds of the people which is most evocative, rather than some long-forgotten mental map.
